Objectives
The ACM Multimedia 2010 Doctoral Symposium will provide PhD students working in all areas of multimedia with a unique opportunity to interact with renowned and experienced researchers in the field, and discuss with them about their ongoing research. The Doctoral Symposium also aims at establishing a supportive worldwide community of doctoral students working on multimedia, and promoting social and intellectual interactions among students and researchers from academia, industry and government.
Format
The Doctoral Symposium will take place during the main conference. Each accepted PhD student will have 20 minutes to present his or her work. Then a panel of senior experts (expressly chosen by the Doctoral Symposium co-chairs to match at best the topics to be covered) will analyze in detail the work with the author and the audience for the following 10 minutes, providing constructive advice and suggestions. In order to maximize discussion effectiveness during the presentations, the selected candidates will be interviewed by the panelists before the main conference. The accepted PhD students will also have chance to present their work at the conference Poster Session, to interact with a broader audience of the main conference.
Eligibility
Prospective student attendees should already have a clear direction for research, and possibly have published some results. Preference will be given to students who have advanced to Ph.D. candidacy.
Review process and publication
Selections will be based on a 3-4 page abstract, singly authored by the student wishing to attend. Selected abstracts will be published in the ACM Multimedia Conference Proceedings. Doctoral students who submit to the Doctoral Symposium are encouraged to submit a paper on their research to the main conference. However, acceptance for participation in the Symposium will be based solely on the abstract written ad hoc for the event. All abstracts will be reviewed with respect to overall quality of presentation, potential for future impact of the research on the field, and expected benefit to the candidate from attending the Doctoral Symposium.
Submission guidelines

Applications should include:
* A 3-4 page abstract summarizing the applicant's dissertation research with applications. The abstract may include:
- Motivation, problem description
- Background and related work
- Novelty and significance relative to the state of the art
- Approach, data, methods and proposed experiments (where appropriate)
- Results obtained and work in progress
- The use of figures, diagrams or illustrations is encouraged.
* A letter of recommendation from the student's Ph.D. advisor, verifying the student status of the applicant, date of advance to Ph.D. candidacy, and the expected date of thesis defense or graduation.
* A short CV, including the list of publications.
* Completed the application form on the paper submission page, including:
- Basic information about the applicant's thesis work, including advisor's name, department/institution and expected date of defense
- A statement of mutual benefits of participating in the Doctoral Symposium
- Keywords and key references of the presented work.
The abstracts must be written in English. They have to be comply with the two-column ACM proceedings format (available at http://www.acmmm11.org/content-general-submission-guidelines.html).
