Call For High Risk/High Reward (HRHR) Papers
In this track, we invite papers that explore highly innovative ideas and/or paradigm shifts in conventional theory and practice of multimedia computing, communications and applications. We seek to draw attention to methods that differ from the state of art in practice or theory and demonstrate potential for changed ways of thinking. Such papers may arise out of interdisciplinary work, and may involve cross-disciplinary inputs. These papers may not be “complete” in the “traditional” manner in the sense that it may not be possible to have experimental results comparing other related efforts or that they may not have large, publicly available data sets to be used for performance comparison. However, we expect these papers to be visionary by nature.
For instance, we can envision the following topics that may satisfy the above criteria. However, the submissions are open to other suitable path-breaking multimedia topics too:
- Multimedia meets Science fiction: The ideas and theory are strong, but the experimentation maybe preliminary. However, sufficient evidence that the approach is promising must be provided.
- Multimedia for social good: New applications that explore how multimedia can impact society. These may be high risk because the new theory may be minimal. To qualify the application must demonstrate potential for societal good.
- Multimedia meets big data.
- Internet of multimedia things (IoMT).
The HRHR papers will be similar in length to long papers submitted to the main conference. However, there is a separate submission and review process that would be more like a journal paper submission and review process. Authors may start submitting their HRHR papers as early as January 15, 2014. Early submitted papers will be reviewed within 6 weeks from submission time in order to allow authors to work on the reviewers’ feedback, improve and resubmit their work if needed. Authors can also contact the HRHR chairs by email with an extended abstract and get a quick feedback on whether their paper topic would be appropriate for this category.
We encourage the authors to submit specifically to this category. The selection committee may also identify high-risk papers from the papers submitted to the main conference, including the long paper and the short paper tracks, across all conference areas.
Important note for the authors: The official publication date is the date the proceedings are made available in the ACM Digital Library. This date may be up to two weeks prior to the first day of the conference. The official publication date affects the deadline for any patent filings related to published work.
