Welcome to the December 2009 issue of the ACM SIG Multimedia Records! ACM Multimedia Conference Review CommitteeThe SIGMM's flagship conference, ACM Multimedia is now 17 years old, but its organization changes every year. This allows for high dynamicity, but because changes are not recorded, continuity is not guaranteed, good changes do often get lost, while bad ones persist. An ACM Multimedia Conference Review Committee has been established to improve this situation. The committee and its charter are introduced in this issue. |

SIGMM Award for Outstanding PhD Thesis in Multimedia Computing, Communications and ApplicationsACM SIGMM is now calling for submissions for the SIGMM Award for Outstanding PhD Thesis in Multimedia Computing, Communications and Applications. This award will be presented every year to a researcher whose PhD thesis has made contributions and has the potential of very high impact in multimedia computing, communication and applications. The goal will be to evaluate contributions towards advances in multimedia including multimedia processing, multimedia systems, multimedia network protocols and services, multimedia applications and interfaces. The award will recognize members of the SIGMM community and their research contributions in their PhD theses as well as the potential of impact of their PhD theses in multimedia area. An Interview with Video Quality ExpertsFor multimedia researchers, improvement of users' quality-of-experience is a more valuable goal that an easily measurable quality-of-service. Consequently, researchers use video quality evaluation metrics to assess whether they can increase or maintain it. Unfortunately, though, it is frequently unclear whether the metrics that are discovered in research papers or standards can actually be applied directly in a particular scenario, whether they have limitations with respect to encoding format, environmental conditions, display device, to name just a few. In this issue, we publish an interview with renowned video quality experts. They were presented with a short catalogue of questions and we are very thankful for their insightful answers. |

Report from CIVR 2009The ACM International Conference on Image and Video Retrieval 2009 (CIVR 2009) was held on the Island of Santorini, Greece, from July 8 to 10, 2009. 18 submissions were accepted for oral presentation, and 27 for poster presentations. The program included two excellent invited presentations, the tradition of VideOlympics was continued and a rich demo session was included in the program. Call for Contribution to SIGMM Educational PortalSIGMM has launched the SIGMM Educational Portal to promote educational related resource sharing among the multimedia community. It is supposed to become a comprehensive destination for information such as multimedia-related degree programs, courses, audio/video materials, and textbooks. This issue presents more details and explains how to contribute. |
