ACM SIGMM Rising Star Award 2020

The winner of the SIGMM Rising Star for 2020 is Liqiang Nie from Shandong University.

Dr. Nie is currently a professor with Shandong University and the Dean with the Shandong AI institute. He received his B.Eng. and Ph.D. degree from Xi'an Jiaotong University in 2009 and National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2013, respectively. After PhD, Dr. Nie continued his research in NUS as a research follow for three years. During his PhD and as a research fellow, he was mentored by Prof. Tat-Seng Chua.

His research interests lie primarily in multimedia content analysis and search, especially in data-driven multimodal learning and knowledge-guided multimodal reasoning. Dr. Nie has co-/authored more than 150 papers and 4 books, received more than 8,100 Google Scholar citations as of Sep 2020. He is an associate editor of Information Science, an area chair of ACM MM 2018-2020, and PC chair of ChinaMM 2020. He has received many awards, like SIGMM emerging leaders in 2018, SIGIR best paper honorable mention in 2019, ACM MM best paper finalist in 2019, ACM China Rising Star in 2019, AI 2000 most influential scholar award, and DAMO Academy Young Fellow in 2020.

Dr. Nie was presented with his award at the ACM Multimedia Conference in October 2020 where he gave a talk entitled “Multimedia Compatibility Modeling and Its Application in Clothing Matching”.
