EditorialDear Member of the SIGMM Community, Welcome to the second issue of the SIGMM Records in 2012. We provide you with reports from several recent events of importance for the multimedia community. In Geneva, the 100th MPEG meeting was celebrated, which included a reception of three prestigious grants to MPEG. The Video Browser Showndown was held at the Multimedia Modeling conference, and we report from there. And NOSSDAV 2012 was recently held in Toronto, and we present a short report from participants. The next NOSSDAV is going to be organized in conjunction with SIGMM's MMSys conference. The steering committee leaders of both events explain the motivation for this merger of two important multimedia systems events. In our open source column, we receive an introduction to Mozilla's Popcorn, a means for enabling web video interaction on the client side using Javascript. The developers themselves tell us about their work. You can read PhD thesis summaries provided by a two candidates who have recently passed their doctoral exams. Their theses address adaptation for web service consumption and the use of multiple access networks. The ACM Multimedia Conference celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. TOMCCAP celebrates this with a special issue that calls for paper contributions that take a historical perspective on multimedia topics through this 20 years. Last but most certainly not least, you find pointers to the latest issues of TOMCCAP and MMSJ, and several announcements from ACM and SIGMM. We hope that you enjoy this issue of the Records.
