The 19th International Workshop on Network and Operating Systems Support for Digital Audio and Video (NOSSDAV 2009) was held in Williamsburg, Virginia from 3 - 5 June, 2009. NOSSDAV 2009 adhered to the workshop's long tradition of focusing on emerging topics, controversial ideas, and future research directions in the area of multimedia systems research. The main goals of the workshop are to accommodate timely exchange of research results and to foster lively, constructive discussions on potentially controversial concepts and solutions. For years, NOSSDAV has been recognized as a unique venue that attracts young and seasoned researchers and practitioners working on operating systems and networking support for emerging multimedia applications and services. NOSSDAV 2009 is sponsored by SIGMM, with SIGOPS and SIGCOMM as in-cooperation sponsors.
NOSSDAV 2009 received 71 submissions, out of which 22 papers are included in the technical program. The accepted papers cover a variety of old and new applications, including collaborative systems, IPTV, live media streaming, games, virtual environments, and Web 2.0 applications, touching on a wide range of issues such as security, user experience, traffic measurement and identification, power-awareness, and protocol design. The accepted papers are highly international, with contributions from more than 10 countries across Asia-Pacific, Europe, and North America. NOSSDAV 2009 is also honored to have Professor Henry Fuchs (UNC-Chapel Hill) as the Keynote Speaker, who delivered a keynote on tele-presence systems and their challenges. The attendees of the workshop represent a good mix of young and senior researchers, from both academic and industry -- about half of the attendees are graduate students and about one fifth are from industrial research laboratories.
To foster interactions among the attendees, 10 minutes were allocated for discussion for each paper, while each presentation was limited to only 20 minutes. Presenters were encouraged to present only the main idea and main results. Soft-copies of the papers were made available online to the attendees even before the workshop so that attendees can be better prepared during the workshop to interact with the authors and other attendees. Three of the technical sessions with closely relevant papers were organized as a mini panel format, with one presentation after another, lasting an hour, before the session proceeds to a 30-minutes panel discussion. The attendees generated plenty of interesting discussions and questions during the workshop. To keep a record of the discussions, the workshop experimented with a scribing system this year. For each session, a student volunteer was responsible for scribing down a summary of the presentation and the discussion that followed each presentation.
